The Cosmos Biomedical CPD Scheme has been specifically designed for Biomedical Scientists, Trainees and Consultants working in Pathology to encompass the disciplines of bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology within the area of Microbiology. The scheme is orientated around mailing question cards every 2 months with crosswords placed on the website every other month. Additional activities on Health and Safety and Quality Assurance will be introduced soon. Cards contain information about a particular micro-organism from one of the four disciplines above. The question cards will display an image of some aspect of the organism of interest plus associated questions. Question cards are automatically posted to participants. The cards are colour coded; Bacteriology, (red), Virology, (yellow), Mycology, (Green), Parasitology, (orange), and they are consecutively numbered.

Corresponding, referenced and peer-reviewed text is presented on the Cosmos Biomedical website, www.cosmosbiomedical.com, (follow the Education Series link on the home page). Answers to questions on cards can be determined by reading the relevant text on the website plus reading reference material provided. Generally, one word answers are acceptable but sometimes sentences or paragraphs are required for accurate explanations. Answers need to be submitted to Cosmos Biomedical via the ‘Contact Us’ page of the website, by E-mail, fax or post. Answers will be marked promptly and results E-mailed to the registrant. Correct answers will receive a CPD certificate for 4 CPD points. There is currently no deadline for submission of answers and incorrect answers can be corrected and resubmitted. Cards can also be attempted in any order. However, it is preferred that cards for all disciplines are attempted.

To register for the scheme, please complete a Cosmos Biomedical registration form, which can be downloaded from the above web site and send this plus the appropriate remittance, (see pricing information) to Cosmos Biomedical Ltd. Once registered, a unique registration number will be allocated which must be used in all correspondence and online access will be given to the registrant for the MES training scheme and MES cards will be automatically mailed for a 12 month period. After 12 months the registrant has to re-register at a considerably lower cost. Also, specially designed A4 folders, with colour-coded dividers, question card holders and back issues of cards, are provided when registration is complete. Relevant payment can be made by cash, cheque or postal order, payable to, Cosmos Biomedical Ltd or BACHS bank transfer, etc. Credit cards are also accepted although a £1.50 processing fee has to be added. To continue with the scheme, registrants will have to register every 12 months.

The MES scheme is authorised by the CPD department of the IBMS. In line with the IBMS policy, individuals should register all points awarded directly to the IBMS themselves by specifying the organiser’s code which will be printed on CPD certificates. The scheme is now also being registered for e learning to give it additional academic and professional status. In addition, a virtual microbiology lab based activity will be available from August 2009 to test basic laboratory skills and will be marked automatically on-line. Both credits and CPD points can be awarded and counted towards University degree modules in Biological Science subjects.

The MES scheme strictly adheres to HPC guidelines and policy for CPD but follows the IBMS incentive of CPD points for activities. The Royal College of Pathologists also agreed verbally that Consultants and Doctors can gain accreditation for participating in the MES Scheme although their award system may be different to the IBMS.

The Microbiology Education Series, (MES) scheme is available to everyone working in routine Microbiology NHS labs whether IBMS members or not after paying the initial registration fee. Cosmos Biomedical emphasize that this CPD scheme is not a replacement for recognised biomedical degree courses but is intended to be a sound adjunct to other educational courses in Microbiology, bolstering cross discipline knowledge and confidence in the subject.

The MES scheme now incorporates a further activity in addition to the MES cards. From September 2007, a Microbiology crossword that directly follows on from each published MES question card will be placed on the web site every two months or so. The ultimate goal will be to publish an MES card one month and a crossword the following month, 12 activities in total / year, each activity being awarded 3 CPD points. Non IBMS members can join the scheme and will receive a Cosmos Biomedical certificate at their request.
