Stains for Bacteria:

Gram-Nicolle Staining - is a differential staining based on the structure of the bacterial cell wall.

Gram-Hucker Staining

Notes: The 'fast action' kit is ideal for staining on automated staining machines and for manual and simultaneous staining slides in racks. The 'slow action' is advised for individual staining of slides. Between 230 and 300 stains are possible per kit. Each stain takes approximately 3 mins.

Staining principle: Gram-Hucker staining is based on the same principle as the Gram-Nicolle technique. The structure of the bacterial cell walls and their permeability to alcohol help differentiate the Gram-positive bacteria from the Gram-negative bacteria. In this technique, carbolic gentian violet is replaced by crystal violet oxalate (that does not require filtration) and ziehl carbolic fuschin by safranin, that has no affinity with Gram-positive bacteria.

Fluorescent Staining for Mycobacteria

Staining principle: Fluorescent staining according to Degommier is a fast technique that helps detect AFB (acid-fast bacilli). They appear fluorescent yellow-green against the red background of the slide. This stain allows fast screening and easy reading of slides. It is important to confirm the identity of fluorescent-positive samples by the Ziehl technique.

Fast Cold Staining

Notes: Between 125 and 200 stains possible per kit.

Staining priniciples: This kits excludes the need to heat slides and stain and prevent breathing toxic carbolic fumes. The staining is very quick and applicable for all types of substrates (culture, clinical samples, etc.). The sensitivity is equal to that obtained using the the classic 'hot' method. Mycobacteria appear picked out against the blue background on the slide.
