Description

Bacitracin

CB21/bac.1

0.1 units

Gives zone of 12mm for Gp. A beta-haemolytic streptococci. Other BHS groups give no zone of inhibition. 100 discs supplied.
Bacitracin

CB21/bac.2

0.2 units

Gives zone of 15mm for Gp. A beta-haemolytic streptococci for ease of reading. 100 discs supplied.
Optochin

CB21/opt

5μg

To differentiate pneumococci from other alpha-haemolytic streptococci. Only pneumococci give zones of inhibition (15-20mm) with optochin discs. 100 discs supplied.
X, V & X+V

CB21/X, CB21/V, CB21/XV

N/A

X, V and X+V factors are used for the differentiation of H.influenzae and H.parainfluenzae. H.influenzae requires X and V growth factors so will only grow around discs containing both these factors on minimal growth medium or around the V disc on blood agar. H.parainfluenzae requires only the V factor.  H.ducreyi requires only the X factor for growth. 100 discs supplied.
Identification discs for Gardnerella vaginalis

CB21/gv

Metronidazole (50μg)/ Trimethoprim (5μg)/ Sulphonamide (1mg)/ Bile (5mg)

G. vaginalis is identified by the presence of zones of inhibition around all discs except sulphonamide. Vaginal lactobacilli and catalase negative coryneforms have the reverse susceptibility patterns. Rings are supplied in containers of 50.
Metronidazole

CB21/mtz50

50μg

100 discs supplied.

Trimethoprim

CB21/trm5

5μg

100 discs supplied.

Sulphathiazole

CB21/stz1000

1mg

100 discs supplied.

Bile

CB21/bil5000

5mg

100 discs supplied.

Novobiocin

CB21/nov5

5μg

For differentiating Staphylococcus saprophyticus from other coagulase negative staphylococci. 50 discs supplied.
Multiple discs for Gram negative anaerobes

CB21/aid-01

Erythromycin (60μg)/ Penicillin G (2 units)/ Rifampicin (15μg)/ Kanamycin (1mg)/ Colistin sulphate (10μg)/ Vancomycin (5μg)

Typical reactions are: Bacteroides fragilis: zones only with ERY & RIF.

Bact .oralis/melanogenicus: large zones with all but KAN, VAN.

Bact. corrodens: larges zones with all but VAN. NB - and strain giving a zone with VAN is not Gram-negatives. Discs are supplied in tins of 50 discs.

Multiple discs for Gram positive anaerobes

CB21/AID-2

6 tipped H-Abdiscs are supplied for the identification of Gram positive anaerobes. Discs are supplied in tins of 50 discs.
Oxidase test disc

CB21/ox

N/A

Detection of cytochrome oxidase is useful for identifying pathogenic Neisseria, Pseudomonas, Campylobacter, Vibrio spp., Aeromonas hydrophila and Pleisomonas shigelloides. Technique - using a loop, pick off a colony from the a routine isolation plate (not one exhibiting acid fermentation) and rub into the disc. Colour change is evident within a minute. 100 discs supplied.

H-Abdiscs:

Description - Multiple discs are available with either 6 or 8 tips per disc. Each tip is designed to perform as a single disc, but with the ease of only one application. The shape of the disc and the use of a silicone barrier gives complete separation of the antibiotic tip from the body of the disc.

H-Abdiscs are unique in the ease with which zone size may be measured.

The disc is produced using cotton-based paper of high-quality, which has fewer ionic sites for the binding of antibiotics. The antibiotic tip is also printed with a 3-letter code based on the internationally agreed name of the antibiotic and is colour-coded with an inert dye. Adding the dye to the drug gives assurance that none of the antimicrobic has contaminated another part of the disc and that the tip does in fact contain the drug.

Most currently available drugs and strengths can be used in the manufacture of the discs. Nevertheless they should adhere to national standards.

Quality - Abdiscs are made to the highest quality and conform to the current requlatory requirements. Rigorous quality control ensures uniform performance of the discs and the accuracy of their content. Research continues to ensure the adoption of new manufacturing techniques to stabilise those antibiotics most liable to deterioration.

Ordering - H Abdiscs are packed in sealed tins of 100, with desiccant to ensure dryness. The minimum order is 5 tins of any one configuration. This minimum order may be placed as a standing order with split delivery. The discs are made to stock or customer specification.
